Bhubaneswar, May 30: While a normal & healthy human kidney weighs merely 100-170 grams, its function is too significant for the body.
Even a bit of infection in the kidney sometimes becomes fatal for a man. However, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar bestowed a new lease of life to a patient who was suffering from an incurable nephrological ailments.
A 50-year-old man who was suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), living with a kidney mass exceeding 8.7 Kg, was cured by a compex surgery conducted by the AIIMS doctors. An 8.7 kg kidney mass which is reportedly the largest ever reported case in India, was successfully removed from the man’s kidney on Friday.
The man, who hails from the Nayagarh district was suffering from severe pain and discomfort due to his massive kidney. His surgery brought great relief to him and he did well. He is now stable and recovering well, informed the AIIMS Bhubaneswar doctors who conducted the surgery.
The five-hour high-risk surgery was led by Dr. Manoj Kumar Das, Associate Professor of Urology, Dr. Sambit Tripathy, Assistant Professor, and a team of young resident doctors — Dr. Saharsh, Dr. Mithlesh, Dr. Huzaifa, Dr. Sabique, and Dr. Sachin.
The challenging operation was made possible through the critical support of the anesthesia team led by Dr. Pooja Bihani, with resident doctors.
“This was not just a medical success but a story of trust and teamwork. We thank the patient and his family for their faith, and our institute for the support that made this possible,” said Dr Das.
The patient is under supervision of the team of doctors whereas his health condition is improving rapidly. He will be discharged from the ward after a couple of days said a key doctor who was a part of the intervening team.
