Patna, April 7: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Monday criticized US President Donald Trump for causing a significant downturn in the stock market.

Speaking at the Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan in Patna, Rahul Gandhi remarked, "The US president has led to a sharp decline in the stock market. Less than 1% of people here have investments in the stock market, which shows that it's not an area that benefits you. While enormous amounts of money are made in the stock market, it doesn't translate to any direct advantage for the common man."

The comment came as Asian stock markets experienced a major sell-off following Trump's announcement of a new round of tariffs. The markets opened to significant selling pressure, driven by concerns over the potential negative impact of these tariffs on global trade and economic growth.

Addressing concerns about social inequality, Gandhi highlighted the struggles faced by the weaker sections of society, emphasizing that they are often treated as second-class citizens. He also reflected on the importance of the Indian Constitution, stating, "People often say the Constitution was drafted in 1947, but I believe it is thousands of years old. It embodies the thoughts of great minds like Ambedkar, Pule, Gandhi, Nehru, Guru Nanak, and Kabir. The Constitution represents the ideals of those whom India holds in high regard."

Gandhi also paid tribute to former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, recalling how both leaders were deeply committed to truth. "I was once asked about my great-grandfather, Nehru, and what I learned from him. In the room where I sat, there were pictures of both Nehru and Gandhi. When I looked at those pictures, one thought crossed my mind: both of them loved the truth."

Further, Rahul Gandhi pledged that Congress would work to eliminate the "fake barrier" imposed on the 50% cap for reservations. With the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for later this year, Gandhi's remarks underscored his party's focus on social justice and equality in the upcoming political battle.
