Jatni, August 4: Public anger is mounting over the opening of a new government liquor shop near the historic Shaiva shrine at Sitaram Chhak in Jatani. Despite repeated protests by local residents and various organisations, the liquor shop continues to operate, triggering fresh agitation in the area.

Several organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Jatani Byabasayi Mahasangh, and Jatani Suraksha Manch, have called for a six-hour shutdown in Jatani today to protest against the liquor shop. The shutdown has been observed from 6 AM to 12 PM, with traders and residents urged to support the protest by keeping shops and markets closed.

Ahead of the shutdown, a massive torchlight bike rally was taken out on Wednesday evening, with protesters marching through various parts of Jatani town to raise awareness against the liquor shop.

The issue has been a matter of concern for several days, with women’s groups and other prominent organisations also opposing the liquor outlet. Protesters have raised objections to the location of the shop, citing its proximity to the historic Shaiva shrine.

The agitation intensified after the government reportedly ordered the closure of the liquor shop on two occasions but later permitted it to reopen. The repeated opening of the outlet has led to renewed protests and growing dissatisfaction among local residents.
