PM Modi Arrives in Canada for High-Stakes G7 Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Calgary, Canada, to attend the 51st G7 Outreach Summit. This visit is the second stop on his four-day, three-nation tour, which began with a successful engagement in Cyprus and will conclude in Croatia.
The Prime Minister's arrival in Canada follows a "memorable" visit to Cyprus, where he held extensive discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the "exceptional warmth and hospitality" extended during the visit, setting a positive tone for the rest of the tour.
A Summit Dominated by Geopolitical Tensions
The G7 summit, held in Kananaskis, Alberta, is taking place amidst a tense international climate, with the ongoing conflicts between Israel and Iran, and Russia and Ukraine, expected to dominate discussions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also among the guest leaders attending the event, highlighting the urgency of the security agenda. This summit marks Prime Minister Modi's first major multilateral appearance since the conclusion of "Operation Sindoor," a counter-terrorism operation conducted in May.
Key Agendas and Bilateral Meetings
The G7 Outreach Summit is scheduled to focus on three central themes: "Protecting our communities around the world," "Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition," and "Securing the partnerships of the future." Along with India and Ukraine, leaders from Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea are participating as special invitees.
During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold a series of important bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. These include discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as with his counterparts from Germany, Italy, and Ukraine. These one-on-one engagements are crucial opportunities to strengthen diplomatic ties and discuss matters of mutual interest. The Prime Minister's arrival in Canada coincided with reports that US President Donald Trump was cutting his G7 trip short to attend a National Security Council meeting regarding the Iran-Israel crisis.
Following his participation in the summit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to depart for Zagreb, Croatia, on Tuesday evening for the final leg of his international tour.
