Pranavi Urs scripts history winning India's first golf gold

Indian golfer Pranavi Urs made history by securing a double medal haul at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. She claimed an individual gold and helped her country win silver in the women's team event. This victory marks a significant milestone for Indian sports. She is now the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold at this continental tournament. Historically, India has waited decades for top-podium golf finishes at this level. Before this win, Shiv Kapur took home the men's individual gold back in 2002. Overcoming immense pressure, the 23-year-old athlete from Mysuru finished the final round with a total score of 15-under 265. She narrowly defeated China's Yin Ruoning and Singapore's Shannon Tan, who both finished at 14-under.

Entering the final day with a three-shot lead, she faced serious trouble early on. She hit a triple bogey on the third hole, putting her position at risk. Showing great mental toughness, she bounced back by shooting three birdies. She held her nerve on the crucial final two holes. Hitting steady par putts, including on the 18th hole, she maintained her lead over her rivals.

Beyond her solo triumph, her stellar play boosted the Indian women's golf team. Playing alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar, the trio captured the silver medal. India finished the event at 14-under 546. Tournament rules count the two best scores from the three players for the final tally. China secured the team gold by finishing at 22-under 538. During the final round, Aditi Ashok shot a solid 67, while Diksha Dagar finished with a 77.

These impressive golf performances boosted India's overall standing on the second-to-last day of competition. Earlier that same day, 17-year-old archer Kumkum Mohod grabbed an individual recurve gold after beating South Korea's Oh Yejin in a tense shoot-off. These wins pushed India's medal count to 79. The total included 18 gold, 26 silver, and 35 bronze medals. Meanwhile, the men's golf team featuring Veer Ahlawat, Saptak Talwar, and Yuvraj Sandhu prepared for their final stroke play events.
