Indian teenager Kumkum Mohod claims historic Asian Games gold
Seventeen-year-old Indian archer Kumkum Mohod created history at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya by securing India's first individual women's recurve gold medal. She defeated South Korean archer Oh Yejin 6-5 following a tense shoot-off on Saturday.
Sports networks covering the event noted that Oh shot an 8 in the decisive single-arrow tiebreaker. Kumkum maintained her composure under intense pressure and struck a perfect 10 to claim the championship title.
Both competitors found themselves tied 5-5 after five gruelling sets. Oh won the opening set 29-27 and tied the second 29-29 to take an early 3-1 lead. Kumkum fought back in the third set with three consecutive 10s, scoring a perfect 30 against Oh's 29 to level the match 3-3. Oh took the fourth set 28-27. Facing immediate elimination, Kumkum scored another flawless 30 in the fifth set while Oh shot 28, forcing the match into a shoot-off.
Tarundeep Rai previously won India's only individual recurve medal, bringing home silver at the 2010 Guangzhou Games. This victory officially makes Kumkum the first Indian female to achieve an individual recurve medal at this continental event, shifting the competitive landscape of archery in Asia.

Earlier in the week, Kumkum secured the women's recurve team gold alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma by beating South Korea 5-3. She also earned a mixed team silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara after falling 3-5 to China. Before reaching the final round, Kumkum defeated Olympic champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 and Chinese silver medallist Zhu Jingyi 6-2.
Her latest victory brings India's current Asian Games medal count to 77. This overall total consists of 17 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze medals.
