Indian women win historic Asian Games hockey gold medal
Breaking a four-decade drought, India secured gold at the Asian Games by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in Kakamigahara, Japan. Led by Salima Tete, this victory hands India its first top podium finish since 1982. Securing this championship also guarantees direct entry to the LA 2028 Olympics.
Striker Lalremsiami marked her 200th international appearance with a spectacular reverse-stick goal in the 10th minute. Salima Tete started the attacking sequence with a strong run before passing to Sakshi Rana. Sakshi quickly found Lalremsiami, who scored from a difficult angle to put India ahead. Historically, Indian hockey has faced immense challenges against higher-ranked Asian rivals, making this tactical win against world number four China particularly significant.
Despite falling behind, China controlled possession and aggressively pushed into the striking circle. They registered eight penetrations in the first quarter alone, compared to four from India. However, compact defensive strategies kept the Chinese forwards at bay.
Defensive masterclass defies Chinese pressure
China increased their offensive intensity during the second quarter. Navneet Kaur blocked a crucial shot on the goal line to maintain the slim lead. Moments later, umpires awarded China a penalty stroke following a dangerous play inside the circle. Veteran goalkeeper Savita stepped up to the challenge, diving sharply to her left to block the shot brilliantly.
Tension mounted in the third quarter when umpires initially awarded another penalty stroke to China. India immediately requested a video referral. Officials reviewed the play and downgraded the call to a penalty corner after determining the ball hit Navneet's foot unintentionally. Captain Salima Tete blocked the resulting flick but sustained a hand injury that forced her off the field temporarily.
