OSLO, May 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasized the need for resolving the West Asia crisis and the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that military action alone cannot bring lasting peace.
Modi made these remarks after extensive talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, focusing on strengthening the overall trajectory of India-Norway bilateral relations.
“India and Norway both believe in a rules-based order, dialogue, and diplomacy. We agree that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone,” Modi said in a televised statement. “Whether it is Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support all efforts aimed at ending conflicts early and achieving peace.”
The Prime Minister met Store shortly after arriving in Oslo from Sweden as part of his four-nation European tour.
During the discussions, Modi also highlighted the importance of reforming global institutions to effectively address growing international challenges. “We also agree that reforming global institutions is essential for tackling today’s complex global issues,” he said. He further reiterated India’s commitment to eradicating terrorism in all its forms.
Modi expressed gratitude to Norway for its support following last year’s Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. “I had planned to visit Norway last year but had to postpone due to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. During that difficult time, Norway stood firmly with India against terrorism, demonstrating true friendship. Today, I convey my heartfelt thanks for that solidarity,” he said.
In addition, Modi welcomed Norway’s decision to join the India-led Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. “As two major maritime nations, we will collaborate to enhance the marine economy, maritime security, and capacity building,” he said.
