PM Modi to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Putin after SCO Summit in Tianjin: MEA

Tianjin, China | August 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed on Sunday.

Briefing the media, Misri said the Prime Minister will first address the SCO plenary session, where he will highlight India’s vision for strengthening regional cooperation. “After the plenary, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin before returning to India,” he stated.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO leaders’ summit. This marked their first interaction since the BRICS Summit in June 2024 in Kazan, Russia. Modi also attended the official reception hosted by President Xi at the Tianjin Meijiang International Convention and Exhibition Center, where he was warmly welcomed by Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, before joining other leaders for a group photograph symbolising regional solidarity.

Russian President Putin also participated in the reception, accompanied by senior officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Chief of Staff Maxim Oreshkin, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, and Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian news agency TASS reported.

During his engagement with President Xi, PM Modi invited him to attend the BRICS Summit that India will host in 2026. Xi expressed gratitude for the invitation and assured China’s support for India’s upcoming BRICS presidency. India will assume leadership of the grouping from Brazil.

On the sidelines of the SCO Summit, PM Modi also held talks with Myanmar’s acting President and military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Reaffirming India’s commitment under its Neighbourhood FirstAct East, and Indo-Pacific policies, Modi stressed the importance of ties with Myanmar. The two leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation and discussed future areas of collaboration in defence, security, border management, trade, and development partnerships, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
