Plastic Free Day: Dia Mirza’s story on Son’s anti-plastic stand sparks debate on sustainability & privilege

Mumbai, Jul 3: On the occasion of Plastic Free Day, actor and environmental advocate Dia Mirza has once again brought the conversation around sustainable living into the spotlight. However, a recent anecdote about her five-year-old son, Avyaan, has sparked a wider online debate on environmental responsibility and privilege.

Speaking on Soha Ali Khan's podcast, Dia recalled an incident in which Avyaan answered the door to a coconut water delivery. According to the actor, the child politely told the delivery worker that plastic bags and plastic straws were not allowed inside their home. He then requested the worker to remove the coconut from its plastic packaging, leave it outside, and take the plastic bag and straw back.

Soha Ali Khan praised the young boy's confidence, saying it reflected strong values and environmental awareness at an early age.

The clip quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions. While many users applauded Dia Mirza for instilling eco-friendly habits in her son from a young age, others questioned whether the delivery worker was unfairly burdened for simply carrying out his job.

Several social media users described the incident as an example of privilege, arguing that consumers concerned about plastic waste should instead opt for reusable containers or buy directly from local vendors to reduce packaging waste.

Dia Mirza has long been a vocal advocate for environmental conservation, regularly promoting sustainable living, plastic-free practices, climate action and responsible consumption. Through her public engagements and campaigns, she has consistently encouraged individuals to adopt environmentally conscious lifestyles.

On the personal front, Dia married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021, and the couple welcomed their son Avyaan later that year. Professionally, she will next be seen in the upcoming Netflix film Ikka, alongside Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna.

While Dia Mirza shared the story as an example of parenting rooted in sustainability, the incident has evolved into a broader discussion on balancing environmental responsibility with everyday realities and the social dimensions of climate-conscious choices.
