Puri, Oct 7: Panic gripped passengers after a boat carrying more than 50 people and 15 motorcycles developed a mechanical problem in the middle of Chilika Lake near Mahinsa village on Wednesday.
The boat had left Jahnikuda Ghat for Satapada when it suddenly developed a technical snag just minutes after departure. With deep water surrounding the boat, passengers reportedly became frightened and raised alarm, fearing the vessel could become overloaded or capsize.
Several college students and children were among those on board. The boat operator reportedly failed to repair the engine, leaving the vessel stranded in the lake.
Fortunately, another boat reached the spot and safely evacuated all the passengers along with their motorcycles. They were subsequently taken to Satapada. All passengers are reported to be safe.
The incident has once again raised concerns over passenger safety on the Chilika route. Locals alleged that overcrowding of boats is common, with operators allegedly carrying passengers beyond the vessels' capacity for financial gain.
They have also questioned the lack of strict monitoring by the district administration and demanded regular safety and capacity checks of passenger boats operating on the busy Chilika route.
