New Delhi, October 6: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several other party leaders, were detained by Delhi Police on Monday following hours of protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Akashvani Bhawan.

Congress MPs Pawan Khera, KC Venugopal and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring were among those detained. New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma was present at the spot.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Police had also detained several Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, including Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib, outside Akashvani Bhawan.

The Congress leaders had launched a sit-in after leaders of several INDIA bloc parties were stopped while marching towards Nirvachan Sadan. The protest forms part of the Opposition's broader "Save Democracy" campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI), particularly over the ongoing controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

KC Venugopal, who was among those participating in the dharna, said the protesters would not withdraw until their demands were addressed.

“Unmoved. Unfazed. We will not budge until our demands are met. We will not rest until our democracy is saved from the Vote Chors,” Venugopal said in a post on X.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Centre and urged the Election Commissioners to meet Opposition leaders and respond to their concerns regarding the SIR exercise across the country. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining the electoral process.

Meanwhile, the Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check unit dismissed social media claims that the Union Home Ministry had approached Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to end their protest at Akashvani Bhawan.

The PIB Fact Check unit said the claims were misleading and urged people to rely only on verified information.
