Bhubaneswar, Oct 12: Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) Chairperson Shobhana Mohanty today informed that a team from the commission will visit Durgapur in West Bengal to investigate the alleged gang rape of an Odia medical student.
Expressing strong condemnation of the incident, Mohanty said she was deeply shocked by the brutality of the crime and vowed to ensure that the victim receives justice.
“I am in constant touch with the victim’s family. A team of administrative officials, including the Additional District Magistrate and district welfare officers, has already visited the site and held discussions with the local administration and police,” Mohanty said.
She reiterated that no one is above the law and that the culprits would face stringent punishment.
The Women’s Commission chief also criticised the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, drawing comparisons to the earlier RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case.
“The situation in West Bengal continues to be alarming,” she said, voicing concern for the safety of women in the state.
Mohanty assured that the Commission would extend all possible support to secure justice for the Odia student who suffered the heinous assault.
