'One Nation, One Student ID': Over 26.35 Crore Verified APAAR IDs Generated Across India

New Delhi, July 5: More than 26.35 crore verified APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) IDs have been generated across India as of July 2, marking a significant milestone in the government's 'One Nation, One Student ID' initiative, according to an official factsheet released on Sunday.

The APAAR ID is a unique 12-digit student identification number linked to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) system. Accessible through DigiLocker and the ABC platform, it serves as a unified digital academic identity, enabling students to securely access and manage their educational records across higher education, vocational training, skill development, and other recognised learning programmes.

The factsheet stated that school education records will also be integrated with APAAR under the National Academic Depository (NAD)-ABC framework. To ensure wider access, especially in remote and underserved regions, students can obtain their APAAR IDs through their nearest Common Service Centre (CSC).

The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)aims to create a flexible and learner-centric education system by allowing students to accumulate, store, transfer, and redeem academic credits throughout their educational journey. The initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Credit Framework (NCrF), supporting multiple entry and exit options while promoting lifelong learning.

Under the system, students who temporarily discontinue their studies can retain the academic credits they have already earned. These credits remain valid for up to seven years, allowing learners to resume their education at a later stage without losing their previous academic progress.

By maintaining a secure digital record of academic achievements, the ABC and APAAR platforms simplify credit transfers between institutions, improve transparency in academic record management, and reduce administrative hurdles for students.

The integrated platform also connects schools, universities, skill development institutions, and other educational stakeholders, helping build a unified digital education ecosystem. Together,ABC and APAARare expected to make India's education system more flexible, transparent, and accessible while providing every learner with a lifelong digital academic identity.
