Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has granted permission to three government Ayurveda medical colleges in Odisha to conduct admissions for the 2026-27 academic session.
The approval covers undergraduate BAMS seats as well as postgraduate programmes at the three institutions, providing new opportunities for students seeking careers in Ayurveda.
At Gopabandhu Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Puri, permission has been granted for 60 seats in the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme, along with an additional 15 seats reserved for candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The college has also received approval for 19 postgraduate seats across five subjects, including four seats reserved for the EWS category.
The Kaviraj Ananta Tripathy Sharma Ayurveda College at Ankushpur in Ganjam has been permitted to admit 60 students to the BAMS programme. It has also received approval for four postgraduate seats in Shalya Tantra.
Similarly, the Government Ayurvedic College, Balangir, has been granted permission for 60 BAMS seats and eight postgraduate seats across two subjects.
The approvals followed an assessment conducted by the NCISM, during which certain deficiencies related to teaching and non-teaching staff, hospital personnel and infrastructure were identified at the institutions.
Following the assessment, a hearing was conducted as part of the regulatory process. The Director of the Directorate of AYUSH and the Special Secretary of the Health Department participated in the hearing.
During the proceedings, the state authorities assured the commission that the identified deficiencies would be addressed within the stipulated timeframe.
Following these assurances and the subsequent process, NCISM granted permission for admissions for the 2026-27 academic session.
The approval is expected to strengthen Ayurveda education in the state while expanding access to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in the traditional Indian system of medicine.
