Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The Central Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance cruise tourism in Odisha by developing four new river cruise circuits under its Cruise India Mission.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced the initiative in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting Odisha’s untapped potential for riverine and coastal tourism.
The initiative aims to showcase the state’s rich natural beauty, cultural heritage, and biodiversity through carefully curated cruise circuits along its major rivers.
The four circuits planned for development are:
(1) Bhitarkanika Circuit: This circuit will operate on National Waterway 14 along the Baitarani River, offering tourists a journey through the pristine mangroves and wildlife sanctuaries of Bhitarkanika National Park, a UNESCO-recognized Ramsar site.
(2) Jobra Circuit: Set to traverse National Waterway 64 along the Mahanadi River, this circuit will provide a scenic exploration of Odisha’s heartland, connecting key cultural and historical landmarks along the river.
(3) Lalitgiri–Udaygiri–Ratnagiri Circuit: Operating on National Waterway 22, this circuit will cover the Birupa, Badi Genguti, and Brahmani rivers, showcasing the ancient Buddhist heritage sites of Lalitgiri, Udaygiri, and Ratnagiri, known for their archaeological significance.
(4) Balasore Hidden Beach Circuit: This circuit, on National Waterway 23 along the Budhabalanga River, will highlight the serene coastal landscapes and lesser-known beaches of Balasore, offering a unique blend of riverine and coastal experiences.
