Birendra Pani Brings Odisha Heritage To New Delhi With Neo-Urban Avatar Solo Art Show

Odishan heritage meets modern consumerism at New Delhi art gallery

New Delhi welcomes prominent contemporary Indian painter Birendra Pani for his 16th solo art exhibition, launching with an opening reception on June 30, 2026. Titled "Neo-Urban Avatar: A Mythopoesis of the Contemporary Times-II," the public display runs from July 1 through July 14, 2026, at the India International Centre (IIC) Art Gallery inside the Kamala Devi Complex. Organized in partnership with the Purushottam Public Trust, the gallery will open its doors daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, featuring direct evening interactions and walkthroughs with the creator.

Visual Evolution of Odishan Roots

Everyday urban struggles find expression through a unique creative voice steeped in Eastern Indian legacy. Visitors can explore 35 distinct paintings, drawings, and prints that challenge the fast-paced nature of global consumerism. Pani, an alumnus of Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan and MS University in Vadodara, holds deep regional relevance as a celebrated cultural ambassador of Odisha. His current creations directly borrow structural principles from classical Odishan Pattachitra, native folklore, temple architecture, and traditional palm-leaf carvings. By blending these classical elements with sharp modern satire, he addresses environmental degradation and the frequent displacement of localized history.

Decades of international experience shape this latest collection. Over a career spanning more than 35 years, Pani has showcased his vision in high-profile cultural hubs like New York, San Diego, and Malaysia, alongside participating in over 350 collective global showcases. This latest venture acts as a creative bridge, utilising ancient iconographies to dissect the anxieties of modern human existence. Supported previously by senior fellowships from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, his technical mastery in printmaking offers gallery visitors a layered narrative on how commercialization reshapes identity.
