Odisha: Woman killed, four injured as truck rams into seven shops in Mayurbhanj

Baripada, Sept 30: In a series accident reported from Bangiriposi area of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, a woman was killed and four others sustained injuries after a truck reportedly rammed into seven shops last night.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sasmita Mohanta. Among the injured, one woman, Janhabi Mohapatra, is in critical condition and has been referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital. The other three injured individuals — Krishna Mohapatra, Priyanka Mohapatra, and Saroj Dandapat — sustained minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.

As per reports, the mishap took place around 10:30 PM at Bombay Chhak under Jharpokharia police limits in the district, after all shops in the area had closed. The truck driver was speeding and lost control while attempting to navigate a speed breaker.

Failing to slow down in time, the vehicle veered off course and rammed into roadside fruit stalls. The impact of the collision was so intense that a woman died on the spot, while several others present at the scene sustained injuries — one of them critically.

Upon getting the information, police rushed to the scene, where local residents had already gathered to help rescue the victims. All the injured were promptly taken to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for treatment.

However, Sasmita succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

The truck, bearing registration number OD 01 AD 2469 from Balasore, has been seized, but the driver managed to flee the scene.

According to official sources, a case has been registered, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding driver.
