Odisha weather update: IMD issues red alert to 13 districts

Bhubaneswar, May 12: Forecasting severe hot and humid conditions on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red warning to as many as 13 districts of Odisha.

As per reports, the red alert has been sounded for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.

Additionally, the Met Department sounded a yellow warning for nine districts for heat-wave conditions and for ten districts for high humidity on Tuesday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted that daytime temperatures across Odisha will rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days. These conditions are expected to continue until May 15.

It is worth mentioning that as many as 19 cities in Odisha recorded maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Sambalpur was the hottest, reaching 43.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Titlagarh at 42.5 degrees Celsius and Bolangir at 42 degrees Celsius.

Other areas where temperatures went above 40 degrees Celsius include Sundargarh (41.8°C), Angul (41.7°C), and both Jharsuguda and Hirakud (41.6°C each). The state capital, Bhubaneswar, recorded a temperature of 40.7°C.

The IMD has warned that this extreme heat could cause discomfort, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and people with chronic health conditions.

It advised people to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, wearing light and loose cotton clothes, and drinking plenty of water. They also recommend traditional drinks like rice water, lemon water, and buttermilk to stay hydrated.
