Bhubaneswar, August 2: In a move aimed at promoting prison reforms and rehabilitation, the Odisha government has ordered the premature release of three life convicts lodged at the Special Jail in Jharpada after they qualified for remission due to their exemplary conduct during incarceration.

The released inmates—Ratan Ghosh of Jatni, Surendra Nath Bhol of Balipatna and Bipin Bihari Baral of Nuagaon—were serving life sentences in separate murder cases. Their release was approved under the state's remission policy after they fulfilled the prescribed eligibility criteria, including consistent good behaviour, strict adherence to prison discipline and active participation in reformative programmes.

According to jail authorities, the decision followed a detailed review of each prisoner's conduct record and compliance with institutional rules throughout their imprisonment.

The three are among 19 inmates across various prisons in Odisha who have been granted premature release under the state's remission policy. Officials said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to rehabilitation by providing deserving prisoners, who have demonstrated genuine behavioural change, an opportunity to reintegrate into society and lead productive lives.
