Bhubaneswar, April 27:The Central Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) has ordered an investigation into the reported disappearance of 14 newborns born at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack over the past six years.
The directive follows concerns about discrepancies in hospital records. The RDC has instructed the Superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital to carry out a thorough inquiry and submit a detailed report for potential legal action.
Reports indicate that the 14 children were delivered in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB-GYN) department, but subsequent records or information about their custody could not be traced. The RDC has emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of hospital documentation and the procedures followed in such cases to identify any lapses in protocol.
Women in vulnerable conditions, including those who are mentally challenged or destitute, are often admitted to the OB-GYN department with the assistance of social workers. According to standard protocol, newborns are to be handed over to childcare institutions through coordination between the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO).
However, an RTI activist has alleged that, in these cases, the newborns were instead given to the individuals who brought the women in for medical treatment.
