Shakti Sharma becomes highest-ranking non-medical woman defence officer
Shakti Sharma has rewritten Indian military history by becoming the first non-medical woman officer to reach the rank of Air Vice Marshal. She assumed her new responsibilities as Assistant Chief of Air Staff for Education on Tuesday at Air Headquarters. In contrast, women officers in the non-medical branches of the Army and Navy currently serve up to the rank of Colonel.
Decades of Distinguished Service
Commissioned into the Education Branch on June 18, 1994, Sharma brings over thirty years of experience across various field stations and training establishments. She previously made history as the first woman from the Tri-Services to serve as Principal of a Sainik School, taking charge at the Kapurthala campus. Her career also includes driving strategic defence collaboration by establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT-Kanpur and Pune University. Her elevation reflects the long-term impact of policy changes regarding military service rules. The Indian Air Force officially granted Permanent Commission to women in 2010, which created structured pathways for career advancement and high-level promotions. Meanwhile, the Army and Navy began offering select Permanent Commissions in 2008, before expanding them across multiple branches following a 2020 Supreme Court ruling.
Breaking Barriers in Defence
Securing the Air Vice Marshal rank remains fiercely competitive due to strictly limited vacancies at higher command levels. Sharma's achievement follows other recent milestones by women in uniform. Group Captain Shaliza Dhami took command of a frontline missile squadron in 2023. Recently, Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth cleared the demanding Fighter Combat Leader course, and Squadron Leader Saanya earned the elite Category-A Qualified Flying Instructor rating.
