Odisha pays tribute to Shaheed Jayee Rajguru on his birth anniversary

Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: Today marks the birth anniversary of Shaheed Jayee Rajguru, the revered freedom fighter from Odisha. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi paid homage to the brave martyr, tweeting, “On the birth anniversary of Jayee Rajguru, heartfelt salutations. His unparalleled sacrifice will always remain a source of pride and inspiration for Odisha and the nation. Let us be inspired by his ideals and work together to build a great Odisha.”

Jayee Rajguru, born on 29th October 1739 in Harekrushnapur village of Puri district to Chand Rajguru and Hiramani Devi, played a key role in India’s fight against British colonial rule. He served as the royal Rajguru, chief commander of the army, and administrative representative in the court of Khordha’s Raja Gajapati Mukunda Deva II.

Educated in Sanskrit by scholars in Puri, Jayee Rajguru’s intellect and leadership were recognized early, with contemporary kings attempting to appoint him as their minister and advisor. Following the death of his father in 1780, he was formally appointed as Rajguru and minister by Raja Divyasingh Deva. Later, after placing the minor Mukunda Deva II on the throne, Jayee Rajguru assumed actual royal responsibilities in 1798.

Jayee Rajguru is celebrated as one of the earliest martyrs in India’s struggle for independence, and his legacy continues to inspire generations across Odisha and the country.
