Bhubaneswar, September 15: Professor Himanshu Sekhar Biswal of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), bringing a major national recognition to Odisha’s scientific community.
The prestigious fellowship will come into effect from January 2027. Professor Biswal, who is based in Odisha and is known for his chemistry research, has been recognised for his significant contributions to the study of hydrogen bonding and non-covalent interactions.
Research in Hydrogen Bonding and Molecular Interactions
Hailing from a farming family in the Bari area of Jajpur district, Professor Biswal has built a distinguished career in scientific research. His work has focused on understanding hydrogen bonding and other non-covalent interactions using advanced spectroscopic techniques.
During his tenure at NISER, he has also established a high-level laser spectroscopy laboratory to facilitate advanced research in the field. The facility has strengthened NISER’s research infrastructure and opened up opportunities for cutting-edge spectroscopic studies.
His election as a NASI Fellow is being regarded as a significant achievement, particularly as he has pursued his scientific work while being based in Odisha. According to reports, a chemist conducting research in the state has received this prestigious national recognition after a gap of 35 years.
Inspiration for Young Scientists
Professor Biswal’s journey from a farming background in Jajpur to becoming a nationally recognised scientist has also emerged as an inspiring example for young researchers and aspiring scientists in Odisha.
Speaking about the recognition, Professor Biswal said that he had developed several pieces of equipment as part of his research, which contributed to the honour.
“As a chemistry researcher, I am among only two scientists from Odisha selected for this fellowship,” he said.
