Bhubaneswar, June 13: Odisha government on Friday announced that essential food items such as rice, atta, sugar, salt, and pulses will be provided at subsidised rates through ‘Jan Poshan Kendras’ in every panchayat across the state.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra said that the initiative, which aims to strengthen food security, will be rolled out in phases. Initially, the government will start by setting up five Jan Poshan Kendras as a pilot phase. This will help them understand any issues and gather feedback from the public before expanding the program to the whole state.
Patra explained that what makes this scheme special is its focus on the middle class. This group is usually not included in regular welfare programs but is heavily affected by the rising cost of essential items.
To make sure the program is fair and reaches the right people, the government is working on setting clear rules for who can benefit. The relevant department is also preparing detailed guidelines, the Minister said.
