Bhubaneswar, May 21: In view of the upcoming Panchayat elections, the Odisha government has taken steps to expedite the appointment process for Panchayat Executive Officers (PEOs). The Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department has requested the Odisha Sub-Ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) to issue notifications promptly and complete the pending recruitment process.
The state government has acknowledged that a large number of PEO positions remain vacant across several districts, affecting grassroots administration and the implementation of government programs. The vacancies have been a long-standing concern, as PEOs form the backbone of administrative operations at the village level, overseeing legal, developmental, and election-related functions.
In a letter dated May 18, 2026, Special Secretary of the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, Surya Narayan Dash, wrote to the OSSSC Secretary urging swift action. The letter references previous communications sent on January 17 and February 25, highlighting the urgency due to delays in the appointment process.
The letter emphasizes that PEOs are critical for managing daily administrative tasks, maintaining records, and ensuring the smooth execution of government schemes. With Panchayat elections likely in the coming months, their role becomes even more crucial, including election management, voter list maintenance, coordination with election officials, and pre- and post-election administrative duties. Prolonged vacancies in these positions could hamper the efficient conduct of elections.
The government has asked OSSSC to prioritize the administrative requirement and public interest by publishing notifications immediately and completing the recruitment process without further delay. Copies of the letter have been circulated to all District Collectors, CDPOs, and District Panchayat Officers.
