Bhubaneswar, Oct 25: Unmarried women and young girls across Odisha began celebrating Kumar Purnima with traditional fervour and devotion on Sunday, October 25, observing age-old rituals associated with the auspicious full moon festival.

As the day began, girls across the state performed the customary morning rituals, offering prayers to the Sun God at dawn. Dressed in traditional attire, they welcomed the festive occasion with faith and enthusiasm, seeking blessings for happiness and prosperity.

Kumar Purnima holds special significance in Odia culture, particularly among unmarried girls, who traditionally observe the festival with the hope of finding an ideal life partner. The occasion is associated with Lord Kartikeya, also known as Kumar, who symbolises youth, beauty and valour.

The celebrations will continue into the evening, when girls are set to perform the traditional ‘Chanda Puja’, worshipping the Moon God on the full moon night. They will offer prasad and observe customary rituals as part of the festivities.

Homes and neighbourhoods across Odisha are expected to come alive with traditional songs, prayers and festive gatherings as families celebrate the occasion while preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Kumar Purnima remains a cherished festival in Odisha, blending devotion, cultural traditions and the hopes and aspirations of young women.
