Bhubaneswar, May 6:Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been appointed as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) co-observer for selecting the leader of the party’s legislative party in West Bengal.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will serve as the BJP’s central observer for West Bengal, with CM Majhi assisting him in the crucial task of choosing the party’s legislative leader in the state. The BJP's central leadership has entrusted Majhi with this significant responsibility, reflecting his growing prominence within the party.
In a similar arrangement, Union Minister JP Nadda has been appointed as the central observer for the election of the legislative party leader in Assam, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini serving as the co-observer.
The appointments come on the heels of historic assembly election results. In West Bengal, the BJP is poised to form its first government, securing 207 of 294 seats, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 80 seats. In Assam, the BJP achieved a clear majority with 82 seats, alongside its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), each winning 10 seats. The Congress, despite an alliance of five parties, managed only 19 seats.
Elsewhere in the country, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) scored a decisive victory in Kerala, with the party winning 63 of 140 assembly seats. The CPI-M secured 26 seats, and the CPI won eight. In Puducherry, the AINRC-led alliance comfortably retained power.
In Tamil Nadu, the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly, just 11 seats short of a majority, while the DMK secured 59 seats, indicating a significant setback for the ruling party.
