Odisha CM Majhi Emphasizes Women's Role in Water Management on World Water Day

Bhubaneswar, March 22: On the occasion of World Water Day 2026, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the significant role women play in water conservation and management, in line with this year’s global theme of“Water and Gender.”Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi pointed out the escalating global water crisis, aggravated by conflicts, erratic rainfall, and droughts, which have contributed to ecological imbalances.

“World Water Day is a crucial reminder of the pressing need for water conservation and sustainable management. The theme ‘Water and Gender’ underscores the critical involvement of women in solving the global water crisis. In Odisha, we have made it a priority to involve women in water management through our Mission Power initiative,” said Majhi.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative goes beyond just conserving water, focusing on empowering women to take on key responsibilities in water storage, repair work, and fault rectification. “ThroughMission Power, women have been entrusted with substantial roles in managing water resources. Their contributions in maintaining storage systems and ensuring water distribution have played a vital part in enhancing water conservation efforts across the state,” he added.

He also reassured the public that the government would continue to reinforce its commitment to water conservation. "Since assuming office, we have significantly expanded irrigation and water management programs. Our government is steadfast in its efforts to ensure responsible water use and raise awareness among citizens,” Majhi affirmed.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to stress the importance of water conservation. “Water sustains us and shapes the future of our planet. On World Water Day, let us renew our commitment to conserve every drop and use it wisely,” he posted. The Prime Minister also commended individuals and organizations working towards sustainable water practices.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti, in a statement on Saturday, urged citizens to adopt sustainable water management practices, especially as climate change and water scarcity continue to pose significant challenges. The Ministry also highlighted that the 2026 global theme, “Water and Gender,” calls for inclusive governance in addressing water-related issues.

To further this message, the Ministry will host the World Water Day Conclave 2026 on March 23 in New Delhi. The event, themed“Industry for Water,”will feature discussions on sustainable water solutions with government officials and industry leaders, including Union Minister of Jal Shakti, CR Paatil.

World Water Day, observed annually since 1993, aims to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and the need for its preservation. The day also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030.Bottom of Form
