Bhubaneswar, June 8:The Odisha Cabinet has approved the construction of a new in-stream storage structure (ISS) across the Mahanadi River near Sambalpur at an estimated cost of Rs 440.33 crore, replacing the ageing Ayodhya Sagar weir that has long served as the region’s primary drinking water source.
The Ayodhya Sagar weir, built in the 1960s, supplies water to Sambalpur town and the surrounding rural areas. However, decades of operation have led to significant structural deterioration, including cracks and heavy leakage, adversely affecting its water storage capacity and efficiency. Technical evaluations concluded that repairing the existing structure would neither be feasible nor economically viable.
To address the issue, the Cabinet approved the lowest financial bid of Rs 440.33 crore, excluding GST, for the construction of a bridge-cum-barrage downstream of the current weir. The approved package also includes five years of operation and maintenance. The project is expected to be completed within 30 months.
Once commissioned, the new barrage will ensure a dependable drinking water supply for residents of Sambalpur and nearby areas. The project is also expected to benefit sectors such as animal husbandry and fisheries while supporting livelihood opportunities and improving groundwater recharge in the region.
Apart from strengthening water security, the proposed structure aims to maintain the ecological balance of the river system. The project will also promote tourism and recreational activities through the development of boating facilities.
Additionally, the barrage is expected to facilitate the development of an Alati Ghat linked to the revered Samaleswari Temple, enhancing the scope for religious and cultural activities in the area.
