Sreeshankar wins historic second consecutive CWG silver

Indian athlete Murali Sreeshankar secured his second consecutive Commonwealth Games long jump silver medal on Wednesday. He achieved a best leap of 8.09 metres, becoming India's first double medallist in the event. This victory marks a powerful comeback for the 27-year-old following a severe knee injury.

Former world champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica won gold with an 8.15m jump. Local favourite Stephen Mackenzie took the final podium spot with an 8.08m effort. Prior to Sreeshankar's recent successes, including his 2022 Birmingham silver, India had only seen three medals in this specific event. Suresh Babu took men's bronze in 1978, Anju Bobby George secured women's bronze in 2002, and M Prajusha claimed women's silver in 2010. India has steadily grown its athletic presence in field events over the last decade, shifting from regional dominance to consistent international podium finishes on the global stage.

Sreeshankar suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in April 2024. The injury required immediate surgery and forced him to miss his anticipated debut at the Paris Olympics. Medical professionals doubted if he would ever regain his previous explosive power on the track.

Competition Performance Breakdown

Competing in his second Commonwealth Games after missing the 2018 event, Sreeshankar started strong. He opened with an 8.03m jump before his second attempt of 8.09m briefly gave him the lead. Gayle quickly responded with his winning 8.15m leap to secure the top spot. Sreeshankar recorded two consecutive fouls while pushing for greater distance, and he registered 7.94m on his fifth try.

He has consistently cleared the eight-metre mark this entire year. His season's best remains 8.38m, set during the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. Fellow Indian competitor Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth overall, landing a solid 7.97m jump on his very first attempt.
