Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: The Odisha Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a comprehensive project to upgrade the drinking water supply system in Sambalpur, aiming to ensure 24×7 water supply for all households in Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Burla towns.
The initiative, titled “Improvement of Drinking Water Supply with 24×7 Water Supply System to Sambalpur Town on EPC Contract including Operation and Maintenance for Five Years,” will be implemented by the Water Corporation of Odisha under the Housing and Urban Development Department.
The project comes in response to the growing population within the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation area, currently around 4.75 lakh and projected to reach 7 lakh by 2043. With existing water treatment facilities operating at full capacity, this upgrade aims to expand infrastructure and meet future demand.
Key components of the project include:
Construction of a 110 MLD (million litres per day) capacity intake well
Installation of vertical turbine pump sets
Development of conventional water treatment plants
Establishment of wastewater recycling and sludge treatment units
The system will adhere to the standards set by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) and the drinking water quality norms under IS 10500, ensuring safe and clean water delivery to every household.
The total capital outlay for the project is ₹382.40 crore (excluding GST). The contract has been awarded to M/s Eagle Infra India Ltd, based in Thane, Maharashtra. Work is set to begin on September 1, 2025, with completion targeted by August 31, 2027.
