Bhubaneswar, Feb 28: The people of Odisha bid a heartfelt and tearful farewell to Ollywood legend Uttam Mohanty, who passed away at a private hospital in Gurugram on Thursday night. His mortal remains were cremated at the Satya Nagar crematorium in Bhubaneswar.
Family, friends, fans, and members of the Ollywood community gathered to pay their respects, escorting the hearse carrying the iconic actor's body to the crematorium. Uttam Mohanty’s son, actor Babusan Mohanty, lit the funeral pyre after a guard of honour was given at the crematorium. The last rites were performed following Hindu traditions.
Uttam Mohanty, who had been suffering from liver cirrhosis, passed away while undergoing treatment in Gurugram. A large crowd gathered outside his residence in Jagannath Vihar, Baramunda, to offer their final respects as his body was flown back to Bhubaneswar by special flight.
Leaders, politicians, and film personalities expressed their condolences following the loss of the legendary actor. Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, visited the actor’s home in the afternoon to pay tribute with a floral offering. In his message, Majhi described Mohanty as a hero for all Odia people, highlighting his contributions to Odia, Hindi, and Bengali cinema.
He also recalled a personal connection, noting that the shooting of one of Mohanty's serials had taken place at his house in 2007-08.
Uttam Mohanty had been airlifted to Gurugram for treatment on February 8, after being admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
