Odisha: Bhawanipatna–Khariar road to be expanded into four lanes

Bhubaneswar, May 11: The long-awaited expansion of the Bhawanipatna–Khariar road in Odisha has finally received a major push, with the state government deciding to widen the existing two-lane road into a four-lane corridor, officials said on Monday.

The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and infrastructure in the western region of the state.

The Works Department has initiated the ambitious project to strengthen transport links between Kalahandi and Nuapada districts. The road upgrade aims to enhance mobility, support economic growth, and improve access to essential services across Western Odisha.

Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the decision was taken in line with the long-standing demand and aspirations of residents of Bhawanipatna and nearby areas.

He stated that the four-lane road would provide major benefits to farmers, traders, transport operators, and daily commuters by ensuring faster and safer travel.

The wider road will help reduce travel time, fuel consumption, and overall transportation costs.

The project is also expected to boost trade and commercial activity by improving the movement of agricultural and forest produce, including paddy, vegetables, and other local commodities.

Officials believe better connectivity will encourage the growth of shops, hotels, petrol pumps, warehouses, and small industries along the route, creating employment opportunities for local residents.

As part of the infrastructure upgrade, five major bridges and 15 minor bridges will be constructed along the 70-km stretch. The existing bridge over the Tel river will also undergo repair and renovation work to improve its structural strength and durability.

Officials said the total estimated cost of the road project is around Rs 640 crore, while bridge construction will require an additional Rs 91 crore.
