Keonjhar, June 16: In a major crackdown on crime, Keonjhar police on Monday conducted an encounter operation near the Mahuladihi forest area, injuring a notorious criminal identified as Prabhat Malik.
According to police, Malik sustained bullet injuries during the encounter and was immediately shifted to Keonjhar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be critical.
During the operation, police seized a firearm and ₹12,000 in cash from his possession. Sources said more than 40 criminal cases are pending against Malik in various police stations across the district.
Police said Malik had been taken to the Bauripada forest under Sadar police station limits in connection with the investigation of a recent robbery case and recovery of looted money. During the operation, he allegedly attempted to escape from police custody and tried to attack police personnel using a concealed firearm.
In response, police opened fire to bring the situation under control, resulting in injuries to Malik. He was later rescued and admitted to the hospital for medical treatment.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
