No forceful possession of Delhi Gymkhana Club land on June 5, says SG Tushar Mehta to HC

New Delhi, May 26: The Centre on Tuesday assured the Delhi High Court that it would not take forceful possession of the land occupied by the Delhi Gymkhana Club on June 5, following concerns raised over the government’s move to reclaim the premises.

Appearing before the court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed Justice Avneesh Jhingan that the Union government would refrain from taking any coercive action against the club on the specified date.

In view of the assurance, the High Court observed that no interim relief was required at this stage in the petitions filed by members and employees of the club challenging the Centre’s May 22 directive asking the club to vacate and hand over the premises.

The Solicitor General clarified that the government’s notice was aimed at terminating the perpetual lease granted to the club and initiating the process for re-entry into the property.
