New Delhi, July 22: Following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on health grounds, the government has said the vacant post will be filled “as soon as possible,” as the Constitution doesn’t specify a deadline. Dhankhar’s resignation, submitted on the first day of the monsoon session, has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. He will be allotted a government bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, and his security will remain unchanged.
There will be no formal farewell speech, sources said. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Council of Ministers for their support. Opposition leaders have expressed surprise, suggesting deeper reasons behind the move. The Vice President, elected by members of both Houses of Parliament via secret ballot, serves a five-year term. A new election will be held promptly to fill the vacancy.
