Gandhinagar, September 10: The Gujarat Government has completed DNA sample collection from relatives of 29 of the 30 people from the state, including Non-Resident Gujaratis (NRGs), who remain missing or uncontactable following the flash floods in Nepal.
The samples are being processed for DNA profiling to help identify bodies and human remains recovered after the disaster. The process for the remaining case is underway.
The Gujarat State Non-Resident Gujaratis’ Foundation (NRGF) is coordinating with families, designated forensic laboratories, the Ministry of External Affairs and authorities in Nepal for the identification process.
Six designated laboratories in Gujarat—in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Junagadh and Rajkot—are conducting DNA profiling free of cost, as per Government of India guidelines.
The state government said 30 people from Gujarat remain untraceable following the August 26 flash floods in the Bhote Koshi River area of Nepal, which caused hundreds of deaths and extensive damage. Several of those missing had travelled to Nepal for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
