Bhubaneswar, Sep 07: Nandankanan Zoological Park has welcomed two Asiatic lion cubs, a boost to the zoo’s ongoing breeding programme for the endangered species.
The cubs were born to lioness Maya following her first pregnancy after mating with lion Shibam. With the arrival of the newborns, the total number of Asiatic lions at Nandankanan has increased to 24.
Both Maya and Shibam are pure Asiatic lions and were born to lioness Rewa. The birth is being viewed as an important milestone in the zoo’s efforts to promote the conservation and breeding of the endangered Asiatic lion.
According to zoo sources, Maya and her two newborn cubs are currently healthy. Nandankanan authorities have arranged dedicated care for the mother and cubs and are closely monitoring their health.
