Berhampur, June 6: In an alleged case of attempted suicide stemming from a prolonged family dispute, an MV constable reportedly set himself on fire on Friday night. The injured constable has been identified as Ashutosh Mridangia.

Sources said Ashutosh and his wife, who is also employed in the police department, had been involved in frequent marital disputes for some time. Several cases related to their differences are reportedly pending before the court.

On Friday night, an argument allegedly broke out between the couple over an undisclosed issue. Following the altercation, Ashutosh is said to have attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze.

He sustained critical burn injuries and was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.

Berhampur SP visited the hospital and reviewed the constable's health condition. Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident and are investigating the circumstances that led to the extreme step.
