Bhubaneswar,August 3: A massive fire broke out at a cotton manufacturing unit in Patrapada on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Monday morning, triggering panic among residents in the area. The blaze spread rapidly through the factory due to the presence of highly flammable cotton, engulfing the entire premises within a short span of time.

Three fire tenders were initially pressed into service to douse the flames, while a specialised striking force was also deployed to assist in the firefighting operation. However, the fire continued to rage despite sustained efforts by the Fire Services personnel.

On receiving information about the incident, firefighters rushed to the spot and launched an extensive operation to bring the blaze under control. As the situation remained critical, additional fire tenders were requisitioned from Jatni to strengthen the firefighting efforts.

Officials said the presence of diesel generator (DG) sets around the factory has raised concerns over the possibility of a major explosion if the fire spreads further. Firefighters are taking all necessary precautions to prevent the flames from reaching the generators.

The incident has created fear and anxiety among local residents. Police from Tamando have been deployed at the site to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.

The Deputy Fire Officer is personally supervising the firefighting and rescue operation. The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are yet to be ascertained. No casualties have been reported so far.
