Mark Carney Endorses India's G7 Participation, Citing Economic and Strategic Importance
Prominent Canadian economist and former Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has strongly affirmed the necessity of India's participation at the upcoming G7 summit. In his capacity as a representative of the G7 chair nation, Canada, Carney underscored that India's economic scale and central role in global supply chains make its presence at the intergovernmental forum essential for meaningful discussions on key global issues.
During an interview, Carney contextualised the invitation, noting that the G7 agenda includes critical topics such as energy security, the digital future, critical minerals, and infrastructure partnerships in the developing world. "There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions," he stated. "India is the fifth largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous country in the world, central to a number of those supply chains... so it makes sense."
These remarks come amid a period of complex bilateral relations between India and Canada. Carney acknowledged this context by mentioning that the two nations have "agreed importantly to continued law enforcement to law enforcement dialogue," indicating that high-level engagement is proceeding alongside efforts to address outstanding issues. He confirmed that an invitation had been extended to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has accepted.
Carney's statement effectively frames India not just as a regional power but as an indispensable global partner whose perspective is vital for addressing the world's most pressing economic and security challenges. The formal inclusion in G7 chair consultations reinforces India's growing international stature and its integral position in shaping a stable and prosperous global future.
