International cricket regulators fined India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando 25 percent of their match fees following an aggressive physical confrontation during the second Test in Colombo. Both athletes breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct on Sunday. Specifically, officials found them guilty of violating Article 2.12, which strictly prohibits inappropriate physical contact with another player, match referee, or support personnel during any international fixture. This decisive disciplinary action aligns with the governing body's recent global initiative to eliminate toxic aggression and uphold gentlemanly conduct across all bilateral series.

Trouble ignited during the 17th over of the Indian team's first innings. Shortly after Fernando dismissed the Indian opener, Jaiswal aggressively approached the fast bowler, resulting in a volatile verbal exchange. Fernando reacted by leaning his head forward, and Jaiswal retaliated by leaning in closer, which caused their heads to make direct contact. Elite Panel Match Referee Andy Pycroft proposed the formal sanctions after thoroughly reviewing the broadcast footage. Both cricketers fully admitted to the offense and accepted the penalties, avoiding the need for a protracted formal disciplinary hearing. Four match officials, including on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, officially leveled the charges against the duo.

Demerit Points and Future Suspension Risks

Beyond the financial penalty, authorities added one demerit point to the disciplinary records of both individuals. Notably, neither player had recorded any prior infractions within the preceding 24-month period. According to current cricketing regulations, accumulating four or more demerit points within two years automatically translates into suspension points. Reaching just two suspension points triggers an immediate ban from one Test match, two One Day Internationals, or two T20 matches, depending on the schedule. Match officials remain highly vigilant, ensuring that intense regional rivalries do not cross the line into physical altercations.
