Marine fishing ban enforced for 61 days from April 15

Chhatrapur, April 15: A 61-day ban on marine fishing came into force on Wednesday, with the Fisheries Department imposing restrictions from April 15 to June 14 along the coast. During this period, all mechanised trawlers and boats are barred from venturing into the sea, except traditional and mechanised boats up to 8.5 metres in length.

The annual ban is implemented to protect fish during their breeding season, when they lay eggs and their population increases. Authorities said the move is also necessary as sea conditions remain rough during this period, ensuring safety and conservation of marine resources.

However, the restriction has affected the livelihood of hundreds of fishermen, particularly in coastal regions like Ganjam, where a majority depend on daily fishing for survival. With no alternative source of income, many fishermen have urged the government to provide compensation during the ban period.

Officials, meanwhile, emphasised that the temporary halt will lead to a rise in fish population after the breeding cycle, enabling better catch in the coming months.

The Fisheries Department has launched awareness drives through the “Sagar Mitra” initiative, reaching out to fishermen across 27 marine villages along the Ganjam coast. Posters and campaigns are being used to educate them about the importance of the ban.

Authorities have also warned of strict action against violations. Boats found engaging in illegal fishing during the restricted period will be seized, officials said.
