New Delhi, May 23: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Saturday announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had extended an invitation from US President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the near future.
Sharing the update on X, Gor wrote, “News! Secretary Marco Rubio extended an invitation on behalf of President Donald Trump for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future!”
Rubio met Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on Saturday, where the two leaders held extensive discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas, including defence, trade, energy, strategic technologies and investment.
During the meeting, Rubio also briefed PM Modi on Washington’s perspective regarding the evolving situation in West Asia. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi reiterated India’s consistent stand in favour of peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
The PMO stated that the discussions covered a broad spectrum of India-US cooperation, including energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people exchanges. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments.
Prime Minister Modi requested Rubio to convey his greetings to President Trump and expressed his eagerness to continue engagements with the US leadership. In a post on X, Modi said India and the United States would continue to work closely for global peace and prosperity.
The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker.
Earlier, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Rubio’s visit would further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Rubio arrived in New Delhi on Saturday along with his wife Jeanette D Rubio, Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel after concluding his visit to Kolkata earlier in the day.
The US Secretary of State is also scheduled to attend the dedication ceremony of the new US Embassy Support Annex Building in the national capital.
Before arriving in Delhi, Rubio visited Kolkata, where he paid tribute to Mother Teresa at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity. Praising her legacy of compassion and humanitarian service, Rubio described the visit as deeply meaningful.
His Kolkata visit marked the first trip by a top American diplomat to the eastern metropolis in 14 years and kicked off his four-day India tour from May 23 to 26.
Rubio is expected to travel to Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi during the visit, with discussions likely to focus on trade, technology, defence cooperation, and energy security. The visit also comes ahead of the upcoming QUAD foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26.
According to Ambassador Sergio Gor, the engagements will aim to deepen collaboration in strategic sectors such as defence, advanced technologies, trade and cooperation under the QUAD framework.
