Berhampur, May 21: In a significant police operation in Berhampur, the main accused, Mukesh Sahu, who was in connection with the brutal public assault on a young couple on Giri Road in Berhampur was injured during an encounter with the police. He was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where his condition is being closely monitored by doctors.
Reports indicate that Mukesh opened fire on police personnel when confronted near the Berhampur Town police station around midnight. In the exchange of gunfire, he sustained injuries and was subdued by the authorities.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, police had arrested two other suspects linked to the case: Lingraj Samal, alias Rinku (24), from Sriramnagar, and Raj Malhotra (21) from Gajapati Nagar. From the accused, police recovered two scooters, a mobile phone, and a bamboo stick. Both suspects have multiple criminal cases registered against them, and further interrogations are ongoing to identify other accomplices.
The two arrested individuals were produced before the court on Wednesday. Their bail pleas were denied, and they were remanded to judicial custody.
Berhampur SP D. Sarvana Vivek stated that the attack on Umesh Rath appears to have been motivated by prior enmity. Raj Malhotra was reportedly present at the crime scene, assisting the attackers, while Rinku Samal coordinated with other suspects in planning the assault.
The encounter and arrests have sparked widespread discussion in Berhampur, as authorities continue investigating the network and motives behind the attack.
