Bhubaneswar, Feb 23: Madhusmita Maharana, a distinguished theatre director from Gulipatana in Umarkote, Nabarangpur district, is currently making headlines across Odisha. With over 41 successful theatre productions under her belt, she has firmly established herself as a leading figure in the world of theatre. Recently, at the State-level Theatre Festival held in Berhampur, she was honoured as an independent director for her play Panchamveda, marking another milestone in her illustrious career.

Madhusmita began her journey in theatre in 2005 with the play Pralaya Asuchi under the Ganjam District Theatre Artists’ Association. From there, she quickly gained recognition as a theatre director, showcasing her unique vision and creative direction. Over the years, she has directed several plays and worked tirelessly to bring social issues to the forefront, while making theatre an effective medium for awareness.

Beyond theatre, she is the chairperson of Bharati Kala Niketan and has directed various successful short films like Chenka, Kancha Daanee, and Parampara, all of which have won accolades for their powerful messages. Madhusmita’s contribution to society, however, is not limited to the stage. She is also a respected educator, currently teaching in the Odia Language and Literature department at Shri Arabinda Kala Bigyana Uchha Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Umarkote.

Her passion for theatre is shared by her family as well, with her husband being an Odia teacher and their daughter also expressing an interest in the arts. Her life is a blend of education, theatre, and a commitment to creating societal awareness through the performing arts.

Madhusmita has also gained recognition for her work in poetry and short stories, contributing significantly to literature as well. Her recent achievement of receiving the 'Independent Director' award in Berhampur has brought pride not only to Nabarangpur district but also to the entire state of Odisha.

Her dedication to nurturing and promoting local culture and theatre has set an inspiring example for many, making her one of the most respected female theatre directors in the state.
