Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: A local court in Odisha’s Ganjam district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment until death for the brutal rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in April this year.
Accused Kalia Nahak was found guilty under Sections 103(1), 238(a), 137(2), 64(2)(f) and 65(2) of the BNS and Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
The court sentenced the accused, Kalia Nahak @ Sandha Kalia, to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life and imposed a fine of ₹25,000.
The incident took place on April 25, 2025, in Khalingi village, Ganjam district. The young victim was visiting her uncle's house when she went missing. Her body was discovered the following day inside an under-construction building in the village.

Police quickly initiated an investigation, detaining and questioning several suspects. Based on scientific and other evidence, they arrested the victim's distant relative, Kalia Nahak.
According to police reports, Nahak frequently enticed the girl with snacks during her visits. On the night of the crime, he was under the influence of alcohol and had been watching pornography on his phone. He lured the girl to a nearby building, where he raped her. When she screamed and resisted, Nahak suffocated her to death and hid her body.
The police filed a charge sheet against Nahak within 50 days of the crime. The case was heard in a POCSO court which convicted the accused within 121 days of the incident.
The court further ordered that the victim's family be provided with a compensation of ₹5 lakh.
