Jharsuguda, Jul 10:In a major breakthrough, Jharsuguda Police have arrested a murder accused who had remained on the run for nearly 28 years after escaping from police custody in 1998.

The accused was wanted in connection with a murder case registered under Sections 364, 302, 201, 109, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. According to police, he managed to escape while being transported in police custody in 1998, despite being handcuffed, and had evaded arrest ever since.

Investigators said the accused allegedly assumed a new identity under the name Raju Gonda and settled in Raigarh to avoid detection. During his years in hiding, he reportedly obtained official identity documents, including an Aadhaar card and a PAN card, using the assumed name in an apparent attempt to establish a new identity.

Following sustained intelligence gathering, detailed verification, and continuous surveillance, a Jharsuguda Police team successfully tracked down the fugitive and took him into custody.

The accused was produced before the competent court for further legal proceedings.

Police described the arrest as a significant achievement, stating that it reflects the force's commitment to pursuing fugitives and ensuring that those accused of serious crimes are brought to justice, regardless of how much time has elapsed.
