'Jharkhand DGP Appointment Row': Supreme Court to hear Centre’s plea tomorrow

New Delhi, October 7: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Thursday the Centre’s plea seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against the Jharkhand government over the appointment of senior IPS officer Tadasha Mishra as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP).

The Centre, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, has alleged that the Jharkhand government violated the Supreme Court’s directions laid down in thePrakash Singhjudgment regarding the appointment of state police chiefs.

According to the Centre, Mishra was appointed Jharkhand DGP on December 30, 2025, a day before her scheduled retirement. The Centre has contended that the appointment was contrary to the apex court’s direction that an officer considered for appointment as DGP should have at least six months of residual service.

The requirement was prescribed to ensure stability and continuity in the functioning of the state police administration, besides promoting merit-based appointments.

The Centre has therefore sought contempt proceedings against the Jharkhand government, alleging non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions.
